¡@¡@I
believe there must be a great nember of opinions about the serious topics.
¡@¡@The point is that whether in China or in Taiwan there is no an
important newspaper or journal which can publish criticism and comments on
the conditions of politics, social sciences, humanities and social
criticism.
¡@¡@Most of critics and speakers appearing on newpapers and TV are
"famous figures" of all kinds most of whom, however, are really
shallow minded and even ignorant in the humanities despite their
achievements in other respects.
Now the internet open a free channel for expression. But those traditional
media are much more stronger in power. We should try to occupy those
conventional arenas as well.

¡@¡@At
first, I like to say it's very lucky that we Chinese have such a expert who has true
wisdom, since I watched the TV talk show, I admire you so much! What you said is what I
thought.
¡@¡@I am a youth from Chinese
mainland,as you said we should against "du" on both sides of Taiwan strait, we
against autocracy and seperating, at the same time we should support the democractic
development no matter how quick or slow, Mainland or Taiwan island. We all need a
political leader who are true democrat with not so much strong nationalism of the Whole
Great China. I think Mr. Tangben will be a good advicor of this future leader.
¡@¡@I thought that the Taiwai
seperators were very narrow-minded, short-sight and ignorance, just like the ancient
traditional Chinese farmer, their political activity just limited to the small island of
Taiwan.
¡@¡@Finally I wish our good teacher Mr.
Tang happy and healthy every day!
Gerry Qiu from L.A (2000.5.28)
¡@
¡@¡@I have watched you
talk on TV for a while and found, to my disappointment, you are more a scholar than a good
analyst with vision. Your statementssounds more like a child play.
¡@¡@You are not as sharp as those guys from Taiwan when talking about the issues of
Taiwan. They could hit the right spot, but you cannot. You are always overwhelmed by
the literal words by Chen, the newly-elected president of Taiwan, and fail to sniff the
hidden meaning behind his speech at the ceremony. A person with brain can come right to
the conclusion that Chen was, in fact, declaring independence in his speech. The words
were used to fool those without brain.
¡@¡@If you like literal words, you would adore Li Denghui more. His statement sounded
even more pleasing. He said Taiwan should not and will never go for independence.
Taiwan and China will reunion...
¡@¡@Chen and his vice president are playing games. The game is designed to lead Taiwan
to gain independence, not too quickly, but gradually. It will be done when conditions
permit.
¡@¡@Sorry, Tang, you are a fool. You have disgraced all from China!
Minda Ji (May 26, 2000)
¡@
¡@¡@My family are regular viewers of the call-in program in North
American Satl'ite TV station. We applaud your rational views on Cross-straight
relations, which do not seem to get better any time soon. It seems that people who called
in tend to hold extreme views regarding Cross-straight relations. However, I for one,
believe, the "silent majority" are moderate and rational. and some how it is up
to the wisdom of the leaders on both sides of the Strait to cultivate and to encourage the
moderate view to be heard. President Chen has systematically adapted the
centerist approach since his election. He has to be applauded. I was hoping that the
leaders in mainland China will respond in kind; for only when the moderate views prevail
on both sides of the Straight can there be real hope for a long-lasting solution which can
bring maximum benefits to people of a unified and properous Chinese nation.
¡@¡@We have been in the US for many years, so are many of our friends. We all have
advanced degrees, and yet every time we discussed Cross-strait relations, we became
emotional/irrational, as if we never learned even the very basics of democracy despite the
fact we all have lived in the US for so many years.
¡@¡@Sometimes I wonder is this in our genes?!
¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@David Tsay (May 25, 2000)
¡@
¡@¡@I
am sincerely reader. I read your review about Chen Shui-bian's speech. I can hardly agree
with you. My idea is that all the languages in Chen's speech were ambiguous and could
satisfy anyone dependent on his speculation if he thinks Chen is a credible person. My the
problem is "how can one trust Chen Shui-bian?!"
¡@¡@Chen's speech gave me one feeling
that he wants to promote the development of certain "Taiwan culture", which is
derived from but depart (not only different) from our Chinese Cultures. And this should be
the base of establishing his Republic of Taiwan and therefore I did not even the least of
his will to let Taiwan be reunited with mainland China. In your article, you wanted to
prove that Chen would abide himself in Chinese Cultures by his citing of Chinese proverbs.
I would like to remind you that these Chinese wisdom belongs the whole world. You known
that once president Reigan (spelling?) chose Laozi's saying as one of his presidential
speech, could you think that he wants to be Chinese? Absolutely not!!!
¡@¡@I agree with Beijing central
government that Chen did not at all present any sincerity in his talk. If US will not don
some correct things (currently I don't see any clue for US's will to do), surely the
scenes that will hurt every Chinese will sooner or later take place. I hope people in US
can do something and I hope you will be one!
¡@¡@I pray to God to let this cup to
pass us Chinese. But if it happened, I am ready to be back and give away my blood.
Sincerely, An anxious
friend (May 24, 2000)

You've really spent a great effort to make your point of view more objective, never
involving yourself emotionally in what you did enjoy (rarely) or suffer (in most cases) in
those years in China, the whole of which everybody'd like to see but have seldem found
now. Wish you more success in the future.

¡@¡@I find the proposal about a special
political zone interesting, but I think it is too idealist. It is true that the CCP, with
the extreme corruption, is facing a serious challenge. But is it possible for the CCP to
invite the parties of Taiwan back to the mainland? First, it is unacceptable to the
feelings of the communists. Second, for the CCP, it amounts to lifting a stone only to
drop it on her own feet.

¡@¡@I did read your web
a lot. I like it. You give all of us a very good chance to know more and discuss some
politic issues too, that's great.Regarding to special politic zone, how about HAINAN
province instead of DONGUAN? because DONGUAN has too much risk since China is hard to
control all orther people out of this area who like to go there, you know what I mean?
while HAINAN will be more realistic like set as economic zone before. just guess.

¡@Your Forum is very
informative and substantial about the current political, economic and cultural events and
trends in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. It also deeply reveals and lively
depicts various aspects and perspectives of the lives of the Chinese community within the
United States. Besides, it offers insightful views and timely comments on the
current American politics and its influence upon and implication for the Sino-American
relationship, which is crucial to both the Asian and world's peace and prosperity in the
21st century. In short, your Forum has built a bridge across the Chinese and
American cultures, set up a channel for the communication between various Chinese ethnic
groups in the U.S., and further provided the Chinese folks in the U.S. with a powerful
periscope to watch domestic and international affairs.

¡@¡@Hello
Tang Ben, Your comentary on¤j¬õ¿OÅ¢°ª°ª±¾ is very insightful, and I learned a lot
from it. I checked the counter of your page, and the number of visitors is impressive! The
best part of your forum is its humanistic spirit. You are also contributing a lot to
correcting people's unfounded views on human sexuality. The truth is that sexuality is
good by itself, and any restriction on it needs certain justification. But Many people
now, following the wrong part of the tradition, take sexuality as dirty by default, and
sexual conduct, if allowed, needs justification (like marriage). Such a biase about human
sexuality is also often mistakenly taken as a necessary part of morality, while in fact it
could be part of immorality. It seems that you have a good understanding of the good
nature of sexuality, and dare to challenge the popular opinion. Here you have my
encouragement!
Yours, Philip Zhai

There are some conversations regarding the current issues between China and United States

statesmen talk about Asian and Chinese culture, therefore, what you have discussed can
really bring some fresh air to the scholarship of political science.
